Motivational Interviewing

What Is Motivational Interviewing?

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a research-based communication approach for evoking patients' intrinsic motivation for behavior change.

Ambivalence often lies at the heart of behavioral change. While patients may recognize the benefits of making a change, they may also face drawbacks to changing. If patients can’t resolve their ambivalence, they remain stuck—no forward progress.

MI provides a toolbox for healthcare professionals to effectively help patients resolve ambivalence and move towards change.

Over four decades of research on Motivational Interviewing has found it to be effective for catalyzing behavior change related to eating and physical activity, substance use, medical adherence, patient self-monitoring, attendance at health care appointments, and preventive oral health behaviors, among others.

Research also shows that an MI approach is significantly more effective than traditional advice-giving in clinical encounters.
